District Judge Arun Subramanian denied rapper and Bad Boy Records founder Sean John Combs,55, professionally known as “Diddy” third request to be released on a $50 million- dollar bond.
The court ruled in favor of the United States government to keep Combs behind bars until he has his day in court accused of sex trafficking. “The Court finds that the government has shown by clear and convincing evidence that no condition or combination of conditions will reasonably assure the safety of the community,” Judge Subramanian said in his ruling.
“There is compelling evidence of Combs’s propensity for violence” and that if released while awaiting trial, “there is evidence supporting a serious risk of witness tampering,” Judge Subramanian added.
Reporters, fans, and YouTube content creators were anxious to find out whether Combs would be released as the judge considered his lawyer’s plea to be on house arrest in a large three-bedroom apartment on the Upper East Side of New York. The proposal also called for no internet, no contact with women, or witnesses outside of his lawyers and family members, and at least three private security guards to keep watch of him 24 hours a day all at his expense.
Combs plead not guilty to his charges of sex trafficking, racketeering conspiracy, and transportation to engage in prostitution. According to the unsealed indictment, he was the mastermind of a criminal enterprise and used that enterprise to hide his history of violently physically and sexually abusing women during what Combs called “Freak Offs.”
Sometimes the alleged “freak offs” would last for days on end. He even had 1000 bottles of baby oil laced with some narcotic.
U.S. District Attorney Damien Williams says the “Freak Offs” would involve multiple commercial sex workers and often involved a variety of narcotics, such as ketamine, ecstasy, and GHB, which Combs distributed to the victims to keep them obedient and compliant.
Combs is at the Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) in Brooklyn, New York. He is no longer in protective custody according to the Federal Bureau of Prisons website.
If the government issues a superseding indictment, then there could be added charges and co-defendants.
Combs is facing 15 years to life in federal prison if he is convicted on all the charges against him.
